Semiotics

Semiotics are the literal and implied meaning of images and text.

The denotation of something is the literal meaning(ie the image of a red rose). Whereas the connotation of something is the implied meaning(ie a red rose has connotations of love and romance).

The types of images I hope to use within my magazine are images of the students- looking directly at the camera, smiling. The fact that they are directly looking at the camera has connotations of confidence and assertiveness.

Text and words can also have connotations the title Marie Claire has connotations of sophistication. Thus I have taken this into consideration when thinking of names for my magazine. Some names I have considered for my magazine are:

  • Jump in- has connotations of school playground games and also of new experiences and giving
  • Cool for school- has a possible direct reference to the audience being cool. However it could also imply that the magazine is cool.
  • Building blocks-  has reference to playing and the toys building blocks but also the educational ideas of learning and doing it in steps sometimes referred to as building blocks.
