Changes to magazine cover

hey,
I have decided to change the design of my background to include paint splatters which relates to the strapline of my magazine. I have done this because the cover was looking a bit dull and wasnt as colourful or as child like as I would like, so I have incorporated the paint splatters to make it look more child like to relate to my audience.

Colour scheme

i have chosen to use this colour scheme for my magazine as it will apeal to my audience. i have chosen a bright colour scheme to help my magazine stand out and attract the childrens attention. the colour scheme is also fairly unisex so will apeal to both genders.

Semiotics

Semiotics are the literal and implied meaning of images and text.

The denotation of something is the literal meaning(ie the image of a red rose). Whereas the connotation of something is the implied meaning(ie a red rose has connotations of love and romance).

The types of images I hope to use within my magazine are images of the students- looking directly at the camera, smiling. The fact that they are directly looking at the camera has connotations of confidence and assertiveness.

Text and words can also have connotations the title Marie Claire has connotations of sophistication. Thus I have taken this into consideration when thinking of names for my magazine. Some names I have considered for my magazine are:

  • Jump in- has connotations of school playground games and also of new experiences and giving
  • Cool for school- has a possible direct reference to the audience being cool. However it could also imply that the magazine is cool.
  • Building blocks-  has reference to playing and the toys building blocks but also the educational ideas of learning and doing it in steps sometimes referred to as building blocks.

Genre conventions

The term Genre convention means the expectations an audience has of a media product within a certain genre (category).I.e. magazine titles at the top of the magazine.

I have identified some of the genre conventions within the school magazine sub-genre:

  • Formal language
  • Bold easy to read title
  • Easy to read font
  • Simple layout and uncluttered
  • Relevant cover image (usually students)
  • Few subheadings

This will influence my magazine design as it gives me a rough guide line on which to base the design that I know is effective and that my target audience are familiar with.

Audience

The primary audience of my school magazine will be the students and their parents. With the secondary audience being the teachers, governors and local residents. The students will be aged between 5-9 years old and so will be at the beginning of their education. Therefore the magazine will try to encourage and assist their learning in a fun and interesting way through the use of educational games and activities. Due to the educational purpose of the magazine it will have solely formal language and an orderly layout. The majority of students will live locally to the school and most will come from working class backgrounds. The audience will expect to see bright colours and easy to read text throughout the magazine. The main images within the magazine will be Cartoon with a few photos of the school and lessons. The audience will engage with the magazine as it focuses on topics they are currently learning in a fun and entertaining way.
